Thiabendazole + Neomycin sulfate + Dexamethasone
This drug is a combination of medications that are commonly used in dogs and cats to treat ear disorders and certain skin conditions.
- A combination of an antibiotic (neomycin sulfate), antifungal (thiabendazole), and corticosteroid (dexamethasone)
- Applied directly in the ear or applied directly on the skin
- To treat ear infections
- To treat certain bacterial, fungal and inflammatory skin disorders
- Animals with a ruptured ear drum
- Animals that may be pregnant
- Animals with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to this drug should not take this medication
Read and follow the prescription label carefully.
Give the exact amount prescribed and only as often as directed.
Give this medication for as long as your veterinarian directs. Application and use of this product should be limited to no longer than 7 days.
Do not skip doses or stop giving the medication without consulting your veterinarian.
Dose adjustments may be made based upon an assessment of how your dog or cats is responding clinically.
It may be necessary to clip the hair around the affected area to assist with the treatment of the skin infection. Use a skin cleansing solution to clean the lesion and adjacent area.
Your veterinarian will need to examine your pet’s ear prior to use of this product. This product should not be used in animals with a perforated ear drum. It may be necessary to clip excess hair from around the ear to assist with cleaning and applying ear medications. Remove any debris, or crusty material with a suitable non-irritating ear cleaning solution.
Wait until after the ear or skin is clean and dry before administering any medications into the ear or onto the skin.
The nozzle design will safely allow partially insertion into the ear canal. Apply the prescribed amount and gently massage ear to distribute medication.
If your pet requires more than one ear medication, discuss with your veterinarian if it is preferable to administer the medications at different times of the day.
Avoid getting this medication in your pet's eyes, nose, or mouth.
Always wash your hands before and after applying any topical medication.
If treating a potentially contagious skin condition, consider using gloves to apply the medication and consult with your veterinarian about further measures to avoid spreading the infection.
If you are having difficulty applying the medication or your pet is in discomfort, contact your veterinarian.
Call ahead for refills.
Ideally, give this medication at the same time(s) daily.
- Wash your hands before applying any ear medication
- The ear should be clean and dry prior to administering medications
- Check label directions and shake bottle if necessary
- Lift the ear flap so that it is pointing straight up
- Hold the medication bottle insertion tip into the canal
- Gently squeeze the desired amount of medication into the canal
- Massage near the base of the ear to encourage the medication to work into the deeper aspects of the canal
- Wash your hands after applying any ear medication
- Always praise and reward your pet to encourage cooperation
If a dose is missed, give it as soon as you can. If it is time already for the next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to the normal schedule. Do not give two doses at the same time.
Talk to your veterinarian about:
- When your pet will need to be rechecked
- How often does your pet's ears need to be cleaned
- What tests may need to be performed prior to and during treatment with this drug
- What are the risks and benefits of using this drug
Tell your veterinarian about:
- If your pet has experienced previous ear problems
- If your pet has experienced side-effects on other drugs/products
- If your pet has experienced digestive upset now or ever
- If your pet has experienced liver or kidney disease now or ever
- If your pet has experienced any other medical problems or allergies now or ever
- All medicines and supplements that you are giving your pet or plan to give your pet, including those you can get without a prescription. Your veterinarian may want to check that all of your pet’s medications can be given together.
- If your pet is pregnant, nursing or if you plan to breed your pet
Thiabendazole + Neomycin + Dexamethasone should be stored in a childproof container in the refrigerator, but do not freeze.
Keep this and all medication out of reach of children and pets.
Avoid contact with eyes. Prevent oral ingestion of this medication.
- Rarely, this medication may cause local irritation, swelling or redness (due to neomycin sensitivity) in the medication application area. Contact your veterinarian if this occurs.
- If the animal ingests this product, receives long term treatment or is given high doses, possible side effects related to dexamethasone could include an increase in thirst and appetite
- This medication can affect the gastrointestinal system causing vomiting and diarrhea
- This medication can cause weight gain and behaviour changes
- Applying the medication to open lesions may cause some pain (for less than 5 minutes)
- Discontinue use and contact your veterinarian if hearing loss is noted during treatment
- This medication when given at high doses or for prolonged periods can affect the immune system causing an increased susceptibility to infections and delayed wound healing
- Chronic use can suppress the function of the adrenal glands
- It is important to stop therapy and contact your veterinarian immediately if you think you pet has a medical problem or side effect from this product's therapy
- Yes, but possible interactions may occur with aminophylline, gentamicin, NSAIDs (aspirin, carprofen, deracoxib or etodolac), other corticosteroids and theophylline
- Do not give new food or medications without first talking to your veterinarian
- If your pet experiences any unusual reactions when taking multiple medications, contact your veterinarian
Contact your veterinarian immediately if you pet has accidentally ingested this medication or has received more than the prescribed amount.
Notify your veterinarian if your animal’s condition does not improve or worsens despite this treatment.
As with all prescribed medicines, thiabendazole + neomycin + dexamethasone should only be used on the pet for which it was prescribed.
It should be used only for the condition for which it was prescribed. Never use ear or skin medications in the eye.
It is important to have any ear problems assessed by a veterinarian prior to applying any medications as incorrect treatment can result in damage to the ear.
Discuss with your veterinarian what is recommended to treat underlying conditions that may predispose your pet to reoccurring ear problems.
