One aspect of completing a physical exam on a pet involves taking a look and the teeth and mouth. When examining the mouth, I like to check for the mucus membrane color (the gums). The mucus membrane should be a nice pink color and when pressed with a finger it should go from pale to pink within about 2 seconds. This is called the capillary refill time and tells me about the blood circulation and blood pressure of the patient. Mucus membrane color that is pale may indicate anemia for various reasons or poor circulation or low blood pressure. A red mucus membrane may be due to stress from being at the vets and secondary increase in blood pressure and heart rate, dehydration, heat stress or possibly infection within the body or localized inflammation of the gums due to periodontal disease.
