General Description:

This supplement is used in horses as an adjunct treatment to reduce the discomfort associated with osteoarthritis and to slow down the degenerative process of joint disease. Osteoarthritis is a progressive joint disease that can cause pain, lameness, and reduced mobility. This product is available in the form of an oral powder or liquid.

What is this product?
  • Glucosamine + Chondroitin is a joint supplement derived from shellfish and/or cattle cartilage
  • It is a nutraceutical which is a nutrient that provides medical benefits
  • It promotes cartilage synthesis and has mild anti-inflammatory properties
  • Given by mouth
Reasons for prescribing:
  • To improve joint function, assist with mobility, and relieve pain associated with arthritis
  • Recommended for the support of healthy joints
  • May be used in combination with anti-inflammatory drugs
What horses should not take this product?
  • Horses with a history of clotting disorder or diabetes
  • Horses with a history of urinary tract stones
  • Safety in breeding, pregnant, or nursing mares has not been established
  • Caution is advised in horses currently taking anticoagulant medications
  • Caution is advised in horses with asthma-like conditions (human patients report increased asthma symptoms)
  • Horses with a known hypersensitivity to this product or shellfish

Glucosamine + Chondroitin should be given according to your veterinarian’s instructions, read and follow the prescription label carefully.
Give the exact amount prescribed and only as often as directed.
Give this supplement for as long as your veterinarian directs. Do not skip doses or stop giving this product without consulting your veterinarian.
Baseline blood work may be recommended to assess your horse’s general health before starting this supplement.
Periodic blood work to monitor its effects on the body may also be advised if long term therapy is necessary. Dose adjustments may be made based upon an assessment of how your horse is responding clinically.
Ideally, give this supplement at the same time daily in your horses feed. Administration during feeding can reduce the incidence of gastrointestinal upset.
Arthritic horses can benefit from weight control, proper exercise, and physical therapy.
Nutraceuticals are not regulated by the FDA. As such, they have not been required to go through the same rigorous testing for efficacy that drugs undergo. What if a dose is missed?

If a dose is missed, give it as soon as you can. If it is time already for the next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to the normal schedule. Do not give two doses at the same time.

  • If your mare is pregnant, nursing or if you plan to breed in the near future
Storage and Warnings:

Glucosamine + Chondroitin should be stored in a childproof container in a cool, dry place at room temperature away from heat and direct sunlight.
This product should not be used in horses intended for human consumption.
Keep this and all medication out of reach of children, pets and ruminants.
Call your physician immediately if you accidentally take this product.

Potential side effects:
  • This product can affect the gastrointestinal system causing flatulence and abnormal feces
  • Notify your veterinarian immediately if your horse experiences any adverse reactions to this product
Can this product be given with other products/drugs?
  • Glucosamine + Chondroitin should not be given with anticoagulant drugs (heparin and warfarin)
  • Drugs other than those listed may also interact with glucosamine and chondroitin
  • Do not give new food or medications without first talking to your veterinarian
  • If your horse experiences any unusual reactions when taking multiple medications, contact your veterinarian

Contact your veterinarian immediately if your horse receives more than the prescribed amount.

What else should I know?

Notify your veterinarian if your horse’s condition does not improve or worsens despite this treatment.

This product should not be used in horses intended for human consumption.

Check with the appropriate regulatory body regarding the use in competition horses.

As with all prescribed medication, Glucosamine + Chondroitin should only be given to the horse for which it was prescribed.
