Atropine Sulfate Ophthalmic Solution, USP 1% is an eye solution prescribed by veterinarians to help relieve eye pain in dogs and cats. Atropine dilates the pupil, which helps reduce eye pain due to injury, corneal diseases, corneal ulcers, and uveal disease. Atropine can also prescribed for treating secondary glaucoma. It is available in 2 ml or 5 ml dropper bottles. Atropine Sulfate Ophthalmic Solution, USP 1% is an eye solution used by veterinarians to dilate the pupils, which helps control pain due to various conditions including eye injury, corneal disease, or because of cataract surgery.

While generally safe and effective when prescribed by a veterinarian, atropine can cause side effects in some animals. Atropine should not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug. Atropine should not be used in animals with glaucoma, or in animals predisposed to glaucoma. Atropine should not be used in cases of lens luxation (when the lens separates from its attachments within the eye). Repeated use can cause a substantial decrease in tear production. Atropine may interact with other medications. Consult with your veterinarian to determine if other drugs your pet is taking could interact with atropine. Atropine solution is poorly tolerated in cats and some dogs. It has a bitter taste, and if the medication drains into the mouth, it may result in profuse salivation.

Store at cool room temperature.

Atropine
Ophthalmic Ointments

Ointment Ingredients
Atropine Sulfate 1%, Lanolin, White Petrolatum, Mineral Oil, Purified Water, Chlorobutanol 0.5%

Uses
Atropine is a prescription pet medication that is used as a mydriatic to dilate the pupils and as a cycloplegic to help control pain associated with corneal or uveal disease.

Atropine Sulfate dilates your pet's pupils prior to eye examinations. It may also be used to control pain associated with uveal and corneal disease, cataract surgery, eye injury, and other conditions. The medication works quickly and is available as an ointment and as an injectable solution.

Benefits of Atropine Sulfate:

  • Reduces pain after eye injury or cataract surgery

  • Helps in the treatment of glaucoma

  • Controls pain caused by corneal and uveal disease

  • Dilates the pupils to enable eye examinations

  • Well tolerated when used as directed

Use Atropine only as directed by your veterinarian.

Use cautiously on dogs with primary glaucoma.

Protect animals from sunlight and bright light during and after use.

Dose and Administration

  1. Apply Atropine ointment 1 to 3 times daily to treat mild to moderate ulcers of the cornea and anterior uveitis.

  2. Follow your veterinarian's recommendation regarding dosage when using to dilate the pupils.

Frequency of use depends on the desired degree of dilation and the responsiveness of your pet's iris. Generally, the more inflammation present in the eye, the more resistant it is to dilation. Do not administer more than once daily to dogs and cats.

Storage
Atropine Ointment at controlled room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F. Keep away from children and animals.

It is a violation of Federal Law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.

Atropine Sulfate is an anti-muscarinic and works by blocking receptors in the eye muscles that are involved in controlling the shape of the lens and the size of the pupils. Blocking these receptors causes pupil dilation and prevents the eye from accommodating for near vision.
